Celebrating Early Childhood Professionals

There are many things to celebrate in spring – warmer weather, longer days, and being outside more. It is fitting then, that we celebrate the Week of the Young Child, April 22-28, 2007, in the spring. This year’s theme is “Building Better Futures for All Children” and the week celebrates young children and thanks early childhood teachers and everyone involved in the care and education of young children. The AEYC of WNY celebrates for the entire month of April with a children’s art show at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. We hope you get a chance to stop by during April to see the amazing creations of developmentally appropriate art created by children in our early childhood centers and schools.

Spring is also a time to rejuvenate ourselves – personally we may do spring cleaning, start exercising more or plant flowers. Professionally, we can reinvigorate ourselves with professional development. NYSAEYC is holding its annual conference May 3-5 in Westchester, NY. Conferences are an exciting opportunity not only to learn new things but also to meet others in the early childhood field who have a similar experiences and passions. The NYSAEYC Conference this year has some exciting keynote speakers as well as workshops for everyone from infants and toddlers to K-3. For more information visit the website at www.nysaeyc.org.

At the end of spring we will celebrate all of you working with young children in Western New York at the AEYC of WNY Annual Dinner – June 6, 2007 at the Roycroft Inn. The Annual Dinner is a relaxing and enjoyable evening to get together with the many passionate early childhood professionals we have in the Western New York area. We also recognize our award and scholarship winners. The Lillian Brand Award is presented to students of early childhood for the purpose of attending the New York State AEYC Conference. Three Student Scholarships are awarded annually to local students pursuing degrees in early childhood education. The AEYC of WNY Outstanding Awards recognizee excellence in the field of early care and education in the categories of Outstanding Advocate for Children, Outstanding Program Director or Administrator, and the Outstanding Early Care and Education Award, honoring a teacher or assistant working directly with children. Nominations are still being accepted for the Student Scholarships and the Outstanding Awards. Forms can be found at www.aeycwny.org.
We hope to see you at some of our celebrations this spring.
